  • Construction work on Red Line stations completed

    The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that construction work on the 19 stations yet to open on the Red Line of the Dubai Metro is finished. Completion of electromechanical works in the stations ranges from 80 to 97 percent, and the stations should open in February 2010. The Dubai Metro began operations on September 9 2009 with 10 stations on the Red Line. The Green Line is scheduled to commence operations in late 2010.

    UAE-based property developer and real estate company Deyaar has announced that it plans to reduce its workforce by 20 percent. The news was announced in a statement to the Dubai Financial Market today. The number of job losses is thought to be around 60.

    The Independent, a UK-based newspaper, reports today that Dubai’s Nakheel is about to slash 500 jobs. The paper quotes the company response as, ‘Nakheel continues to evaluate its projects and commitments against market conditions and opportunities. In doing so, the company also evaluates its cost base and efficiencies.’ Nakheel Properties is a state-owned property developer. Major construction projects include the Palm Jumeirah, Palm Deira, Palm Jebel Ali, The World, Jumeirah Islands, Ibn Battuta Mall, Discovery Gardens, International City, and Al Furjan.

    Suez Lime, a joint venture between Italian Unicalce and Egypt-based Suez Cement, has announced plans to set up a new plant to produce lime with a capacity of 300 tons per day. The first kiln will be ready by 2011, followed by the installation of a second kiln that will bring annual production capacity to 200,000 tons, Suez Cement said in a statement. Lime is an aggregate used in steel, chemical, environmental, agri-food, paper and building sectors.

    I went into the city yesterday so I thought I'd give the Metro another go.I was visiting Bur Dubai and then Deira and with only a few stations currently open there was a bit of walking involved.     I spent last weekend at the Hatta Fort Hotel-about an hour and a half from Abu Dhabi. I met friends there for an "all inclusive" package (room and board) that was offered to UAE residents. The shot above was taken from the balcony of my room. Those are the Hajar Mountains visible in the background. I really needed about three days in the hotel, but was grateful for one night.

    When I arrived in Abu Dhabi over a year ago, I bought a little Mitsubishi Pajero(a 4 wheel drive that isn't sold in the US). Part of my reason for buying it was to provide a bit of safety on the road. Cars here are BIG. Big cars are often driven by people with big egos. People with big egos and no real model for safe driving practices tend to drive much more aggressively. So, the Pajero has given me a bit of protection from the highway bullies.     Ahmed Humaid al-Tayer, the newly appointed governor of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), has promised to “build on its success” and promote the country as an investment hub, reports The National. “We are here to establish an international financial center for the UAE, to serve the region and to co-operate with other centers from Hong Kong to Frankfurt and London,” said al-Tayer. Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum issued a decree on Friday to replace the ex-DIFC governor, Omar bin Sulaiman, with al-Tayer.

    Police in Ras Al Khaimah have arrested many young people from shopping malls in the emirate for “violating decency laws,” reports Gulf News. The youngsters were reportedly wearing inappropriate clothing “showing parts of their bodies,” and were also sporting unusual hairstyles. Sources told the paper that police gave haircuts to some of the youngsters and also made their parents sign an “undertaking” to ensure that their children dressed decently in the future.

    The Abu Dhabi International Airport has recorded a 7 percent rise in passengers over the course of 2009, to date, according to the Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), which manages the airport. The airport also saw a 2.8 percent increase in passenger traffic during October this year as compared to the same period last year. ADAC also said that during the three-day Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2009 event, the Abu Dhabi International Airport and Al Bateen Executive Airport saw traffic rising by 18 percent as compared to the same dates last year.

    The volume of non-oil trade in the UAE is expected to increase by 10 percent this year compared to 2008’s trade volumes of AED789 billion, reports Zawya Dow Jones, quoting a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Trade.  Non-oil trade in the country reached AED310 billion during the first half of the year, the statement said, adding that the second half of the year has seen “huge activity in foreign trade, especially in re-exports.”
