Seven star service
21 Nov 2009 | 2:10 pmHere's a lucrative career suggestion for anyone struggling in the Dubai recession, and you don't even have to get out of bed:"STUNNING star student Paige Ashley turned her back on a lawyer's career to make £1million as a real life Belle de Jour.My biggest one-off job was with three Arab businessmen at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi," she said. "It's a seven-star hotel and everything is decked out in gold leaf. They paid me £20,000 for one night with all of them. By morning I was exhausted."Arab men are fascinated by Western women. We're almost like status symbols to them. I've met… -

The dark side of Dubai
7 Apr 2009 | 1:56 amProbably the best article ever written on Dubai, by Johann Hari in the Independent. It covers everything from wexpats:Daniel [a brain tumour patient] was arrested and taken away on the day of their eviction. It was six days before she could talk to him. "He told me he was put in a cell with another debtor, a Sri Lankan guy who was only 27, who said he couldn't face the shame to his family. Daniel woke up and the boy had swallowed razor-blades. He banged for help, but nobody came, and the boy died in front of him."To indentured labourers:He shows me his room. It is a tiny, poky, concrete cell…

To old Dubai
17 Nov 2009 | 9:18 pmI went into the city yesterday so I thought I'd give the Metro another go.I was visiting Bur Dubai and then Deira and with only a few stations currently open there was a bit of walking involved. In this beautiful weather that suited me fine, I've always enjoyed walking and I love wandering around the old areas of Dubai anyway.I went from Mall of the Emirates to Khalid Bin Al Waleed station (better known as Bank Street or Burjuman), it took twenty minutes and cost Dh6.50. That compares very favourably with driving, especially with the parking problems in the city.To cross to Deira I wandered… -

Pulling Teeth
16 Nov 2009 | 9:55 pmAfter a pleasant trip to Vienna where the autumnal cold got me feeling that Christmas is just around the corner I got the dreaded sensation of toothache. So on arrival back to Dubai I searched for a suitable dentist to get a check up and see what was a matter. A quick cry for help on twitter and a couple of SMS’s later I settled on the Modern Dental Clinic who have a branch in Dubai Marina. On entering the dentist it was not hard to spot their target market – the Russian receptionist and literature for teeth jewellery were decent clues. I was greeted by my friendly German… -
Don’t Slow Down
4 Nov 2009 | 10:30 amWhen one of my colleagues asked me a simple question a few weeks ago I didn’t realise the implications. “Do you want to go to the F1 in Abu Dhabi?” “Sure, why not?” So tickets secured I didn’t really give it a second thought till last Friday. Then I started to get caught up in the hype. Facebook and Twitter were awash with people excitedly proclaiming that they too were going to spend a day or two at the race. Cool – I thought at least there would be a good crowd. Before I was really more excited about seeing the concerts – Kings of Leon and Aerosmith. I was a little sad that… -
Ten Dubai Phrases
30 Oct 2009 | 11:50 amStruck me the other day while directing a taxi driver that there were certain phrases that I use in common day to day life in Dubai. However, if I was to use them in London I would certainly get an odd look or two. Here are my favourites that when uttered can provide the grease to getting by in Dubai. 1. “Come on let’s go. Yallah Habibi” - getting the gang to move 2. “What to do yanni? - often said to no one in particular 3. I’ll do that today itself “- as today really means sometime this week 4. “I will revert soonest” 5. “I… -

Turning Japanese
26 Oct 2009 | 11:25 amIt had been a long but fulfilling week at GITEX and my feet were telling me that it was time to find some more comfortable shoes next time around. The timing of the Japan theme party at “Casa Jumeriah” in hindsight was perfect. I really did think that I wouldn’t have the energy for it and a quiet night in with a visit from a reflexologist is all I really wanted. However, once you I got there and you see everyone else’s outfits and have a couple of refreshing beverages it is an amazing stimulant. The guys living at Casa Jumeriah again put a huge effort in for the…

I met friends there for an "all inclusive" package (room and board) that was offered to UAE residents. The shot above was taken from the balcony of my room. Cars, Free Music, Good Company
9 Nov 2009 | 8:49 pmI'm not much of a Formula One fan. I don't really understand it. So, when tickets went on sale a couple months back priced at over 2000 dirhams ($560 USD), I opted out. The ticket price did include 'invitations' to the concerts on Yas Island-Abu Dhabi's recently built Forumla One car circuit thingy. Beyonce, Aerosmith, Kings of Leon (I think that's the name), and Jamiraquai all performed over the course of 4 days. Baen al Jasraen
31 Oct 2009 | 12:27 amThis property is likely occupied by an Emirati family.Between Two Bridges...a few years ago, expats wouldn't have dreamed of living "off the island". Many western expats flocked to neighbourhoods like Khalidiya-located just off the corniche. However, as parking woes have continually increased and residents look for more spacious bits of property, areas like Baen al Jasraen are becoming more desirable. Once a neighbourhood populated by UAE military officers, this part of town is now home to three high-end hotels that bring with them wonderful bars and restaurants (see my previous post on the… -
The New Fairmont Hotel Opens in Abu Dhabi
25 Oct 2009 | 10:33 amS and I are planning to walk a leg of the Camino de Santiago next summer. We're hoping to average about 20 km/day (12 miles), so we've started walking. Last night's walk around the Baen al Jasraen('Between Two Bridges') neighbourhood took us past the new Fairmont Hotel. We were sweaty, grubby, and gross, but that didn't prevent the staff from welcoming us warmly. We got a nice tour of the restaurants, bars, and pool area. The shot above was taken from inside Frankies-brainchild of jockey Frank Dettori and chef Marco Pierre White. We actually saw Marco Pierre White while we were there. The… -
Gettin' the Wheels Dusty
23 Oct 2009 | 11:14 amWhen I arrived in Abu Dhabi over a year ago, I bought a little Mitsubishi Pajero(a 4 wheel drive that isn't sold in the US). Part of my reason for buying it was to provide a bit of safety on the road. Cars here are BIG. Big cars are often driven by people with big egos. People with big egos and no real model for safe driving practices tend to drive much more aggressively. So, the Pajero has given me a bit of protection from the highway bullies. It's also a heavy vehicle-much sturdier than the cute and fuel-efficient Nissan Tiida or the Toyota Yaris. Touch wood-I haven't had to test that out…

Avert n' Evade
21 Nov 2009 | 11:16 amCouple of weeks ago, my cousin flew over from Suadi Arabia. He has a running residence visa there and had been working for a Telecom installation company until recently. The reason he came here is that he had a good offer to work for a company that does more or less the same thing he’d been doing in Saudi Arabia. I took his ability to find a good job here as a sign of recovery for Dubai. (or maybe a sign that our Telecom companies are still lagging behind on their installations)The company lodged him in a remote three stars hotel for three days and told him that he’d need to find a place… -

9 Nov 2009 | 10:47 amA little while ago, we've appointed an Interior Designer for one of our prominent projects, I may hastily add that we've brought this fine, urban Iraqi/Canadian gentleman a little later than we are supposed to. Normally, he would have been given the chance to take a long contemplative look at the blueprints of the project before the shovel hit the ground and the construction began. But, you see, we've been a little lazy. The first time Mr. Sami was entitled to suggest any changes on the building, most of the two underground basements have been completed and he didn't really have much of a… -
In the Slammer
1 Nov 2009 | 2:14 pmThis could happen anytime, anywhere.I’m in a clinic of a general practitioner. I finish my presentation and the clerk sees me out and with the that I call it a day. When I joined the school of pharmacy more than a decade ago, I haven’t had the faintest idea I’d be peddling drugs (medical drugs, that is) for lousy pharmaceutical companies. I see dozens of doctors everyday now and give them the pitch; rattling off the properties of each new item my employer is trying to push into the drug cabinets of sick, uninsured people.I twist the key into the ignition and the engine comes to life. I…

FNC & English language requirements
18 Nov 2009 | 11:25 amThe FNC has some recommendations for the education sector: "The committee also said federal universities should be more lenient in their admission requirements for students when it comes to English language proficiency..."To me, lowering the bar is a disservice to students, to their future employers and the economy in general or is it just me not understanding the logic behind this suggestion? -

Dubai Biscuit Breakfast
16 Nov 2009 | 1:24 amThread request:We all know that radio here is bland and PC but it plumbed to new depths this morning when most of the Business Breakfast on Dubai Eye was devoted to a biscuit tasting competion. I was in the car listening with a business visitor to Dubai Air Show who asked if this programme was a joke because it gave completely the wrong impression of Dubai as a business centre. We are living in a city that is trying to climb out of a recesssion and if this is the best the two purile and amateurish presenters (who insist on telling you their names every five minutes) can serve up then no… -
Nose-dive/Crash landing/[insert aviation disaster pun here]
8 Nov 2009 | 11:54 amThis probably has merit as a thread:As many of you know I was in Dubai for the past year working for the Arabic satellite channel Al Arabiya, where I was in charge of the English website. Unfortunately journalists in Dubai and and the Arab media more generally do not enjoy the same freedom of the press as journalists in the U.S. Earlier this month when I refused to compromise my journalistic principles and compromise my credibility, which I have spent the past decade building, I was laid off.Yesterday I arrived back in Washington after being forced out over an article about Emirates Airlines. -
No Cannes do
26 Oct 2009 | 1:37 amThread submission:This year's Middle East Film Festival presented a superb slate of movies, documentaries and shorts, so why does it continue to be the dullest event in the UAE's cultural calendar? Poor branding, weak marketing and worse PR, how does an event with so much money get it so very wrong? -

For men
14 Aug 2009 | 6:41 amIt seems the Dubai men's magazine market is about to explode - GQ and Esquire, anyone? But what's to say new titles - even if international brands - will do better in this market than any previous attempts? Will the ad spend ever be big enough to support new men's glossies?

12 Nov 2009 | 3:39 pmCosta Ship Dubai Dubai has become a big pull for cruise ships, its hot and sunny has beautiful beaches and most of all has a port, this makes it an ideal stopover for a cruise ship. You don’t have to stay too long (let’s be honest sometimes too much of Dubai is not a good thing) . Dubai Opens World’s Largest Ferrari Store
29 Oct 2009 | 5:03 amWith Formula one finally coming to the UAE this year in the form of the F1 race in Abu Dhabi it was only a matter of time before Dubai got in on the act. How would it do that? What can Dubai possibly do to attract some attention to it? Well let’s work off the two things Dubai does best. 1. Attract the most glamorous and biggest names in any sector 2. Be the biggest and best. The most glamorous name in F1 has to be Ferrari without a doubt , so Dubai has built a Ferrari store , big deal I hear you say, I mean there is even one of them in Saudi Arabia isn’t there? Well when Dubai… -
Monkeyface In Dubai Ding Dong
5 Oct 2009 | 2:01 pmSo Ian Brown had to abandon his set half way through his seminal hit, Foooooools Gold, because his security got the wrong end of the stick. The video footage is not ‘alf bad and shows ol Monkeyface strutting his stuff, well lifting one leg then the other in some sort of rhythmic fashion, before he has to cut short his ‘thing’. This is well worth the watch dear reader. I’m not sure what i find most funny, his spellbinding going through the motions performance (jaded rock star milking his greatest hits), the fact that he sets security on an unsuspecting fan before meekly… -
Ramadhan In Dubai Will Begin On Saturday
20 Aug 2009 | 2:13 pmIt is that time of year once again when all eating and drinking will stop during the daylight hours and the attention of the Muslims will be on remembering the one that created them and worshiping him. Ramadhan comes at a very poignant time for people in Dubai, Muslim or not it is a chance to stop and think about what is really important in life. The world maybe going through economic meltdown and Dubai maybe feeling the pinch the worst right now, but there is surely more to life. Something beyond being the biggest , the best , the tallest , the fastest selling or the simple the richest. -
And The Goal Posts Have Moved Again
17 Aug 2009 | 2:28 amAs my last post indicated I am currently in the situation of trying to sort out payment issues on an apartment I bought off plan a few years back. After having some difficulty in paying I was informed to make the best effort I could and that everything would be OK , there was no talk of late fees or anything of that nature. In fact just 2 weeks ago I got an email saying just that. Long behold today I have an invoice that says I now have to pay late fees and all sorts of other things totaling about 40,000 AED , such a shame that wasn’t mentioned when I emailed numerous times without…
